About Word Search Free

Word Search Free is a puzzle site with one goal: a good word search on any topic, free, playable in the browser and printable on paper. Today that means 788 puzzles in 42 topics, hiding 7,981 words between them.

Free Word Search Puzzles on Topics People Actually Study

The puzzles are organized the way people look for them: by subject and by level. Seven collections cover animals, food and drink, geography, science, school subjects, sports and hobbies and holidays, and almost every topic inside them has easy, medium and hard grids, plus many shaped puzzles drawn as a pumpkin, a heart or a tree.

Each puzzle has its own page with a short text about the topic, a list of the harder words and what they mean, and a hint about where to start. The aim is that a student who finishes the grid also learns something about rivers, enzymes or the Bill of Rights.

How Our Word Search Puzzles Are Built

Grids are generated by computer from a word list chosen by hand for each topic, and every level follows fixed rules. Easy grids are 8 × 8 with no diagonals; medium grids are 11 × 11 and add one diagonal axis; hard grids are 15 × 15 with words in all eight directions. Every word is placed so that it can be found, and the answer key is drawn from the same placement.

Every puzzle prints as a PDF, with the answer key as a separate file so it can stay with the teacher. The sheet comes in dozens of designs, from Classic and Large Print to Classroom, Half Sheet and themed pages for each holiday, and can be edited before downloading.

Real Solve Times, Ranks and a Daily Challenge

When players finish a puzzle, the site records how long it took. Those times are published only as aggregates, and only once at least 5 players have solved a puzzle, so the "typical time" on each page is a real measure rather than a guess.

The daily word search comes from a reserve of 364 grids that never appear anywhere else on the site, so nobody has seen one before its day. Players who sign in can climb 28 ranks, each with its own badge, and compare themselves on the leaderboard. Playing and printing never require an account.

Word Searches for Teachers and Parents

Many visitors are teachers preparing a worksheet or parents looking for a rainy-day activity. For them there is the word search maker, which turns any word list into a printable puzzle with its answer key, and the printable puzzles page, which gathers ready-made sheets by topic.

Our Editorial Team and How We Review Each Puzzle

Every puzzle and every page on the site is signed by the Word Search Free Editorial Team. Before a puzzle is published, it goes through the same checks:

  • The word list. Each word is chosen by hand for its topic and checked for spelling and fit: a river does not belong in a list of mountains, and a state capital has to be the capital.
  • The grid. Every grid is tested so that each word can be found exactly where the answer key says, no word appears twice, and no digit or symbol sits inside the letters. Names with a space or an accent, such as New Hampshire or Détente, are shown as written in the list and hidden as plain letters.
  • The text. Each puzzle page is written for that puzzle: what the topic is about, the harder words explained and a hint about where to start, instead of a template repeated across hundreds of pages.
  • The times. Solve times are measured, not estimated: they come from the players who finish each puzzle online, and are only shown once at least 5 people have solved it.

When a mistake gets through, the puzzle is corrected in place, keeping its address. Players who had already solved it keep their progress, and the printable PDF and answer key are updated with it.

Found a Mistake in a Puzzle?

With thousands of words, some errors get through: a misspelled word, a place listed under the wrong topic, a description that does not match its grid. If you spot one, please tell us through the contact page with the name of the puzzle, and it will be corrected.
