Cat Facts for Kids: Whiskers, Purring and Independent Pets

Twelve words about the most independent pet in the house: the domestic cat, a feline like the lion and the tiger, from its whiskers and fur to its paws and tail. Kittens grow into cats, and cats meow and purr to talk to us.

Independent, the longest word, fills an entire row of the 11x11 grid and reads backwards. The short words are the hard ones here: cat, fur, pet and paws all hide on diagonals.

Cat Vocabulary: 12 Words to Find

Words run across, up, and diagonally; 6 of the 12 read backwards. The longest word is Independent, with 11 letters.

  • Cat: A small domestic feline, one of the most popular pets in the world.
  • Domestic: Tamed and living with people, at home or on a farm.
  • Feline: To do with cats, from the Latin "felis", cat. Lions and tigers are felines too.
  • Fur: The soft, thick hair that covers a cat's body.
  • Independent: Able to manage on its own. Cats are famous for being independent pets.
  • Kitten: A young cat.
  • Meow: The sound a cat makes, mostly to talk to people.
  • Paws: The soft feet of a cat or dog, with pads underneath.
  • Pet: An animal kept at home for company.
  • Purr: The soft, rumbling sound a cat makes, usually when it is content.
  • Tail: Cats use their tails for balance and to show their mood: a tail held straight up means a happy cat.
  • Whiskers: The long, stiff hairs on a cat's face that help it feel its way and judge narrow gaps.

How to Solve the Cat Word Search

"Independent" fills a whole row, reading backwards. "Whiskers" also reads backwards, and it is the only word with an H. The three-letter words, "cat", "fur" and "pet", are all diagonal, so leave them for the end and check every slant.

Cat Activities for Kids and Cat Lovers

  • Ask children what a cat uses its whiskers, tail and paws for.
  • Compare a house cat with a lion or a tiger: what do all felines have in common?
  • Write a short story from a cat's point of view using five words from the list.
