Parts of Speech Word Search: Noun, Verb, Adjective and Adverb

The building blocks of every English sentence. A noun names a thing, a pronoun replaces it, a verb shows action, an adjective describes a noun and an adverb describes a verb. Prepositions show where things are, interjections show feeling (wow!), and articles, a, an and the, point to nouns.

Traditional grammar counts eight parts of speech. Seven of them are here; the missing one is the conjunction, like and, but and or.

Parts of Speech Vocabulary: 8 Words to Find

Words run across, up and down; 4 of the 8 read backwards. The longest word is Interjection, with 12 letters.

  • Adjective: A word that describes a noun, like big, red or happy.
  • Adverb: A word that describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb, often ending in -ly, like quickly.
  • Article: The words a, an and the, which come before nouns.
  • Interjection: A word that shows sudden feeling, like wow, oops or ouch.
  • Noun: A word for a person, place, thing or idea.
  • Preposition: A word that shows position or relationship, like in, on, under or between.
  • Pronoun: A word that takes the place of a noun, like he, she, it or they.
  • Verb: An action or being word, like run, think or is.

How to Solve the Parts of Speech Word Search

"Interjection", 12 letters, fills a whole column of the 12x12 grid, running upward. "Noun" also hides inside "Pronoun", and "Verb" inside "Adverb". "Adjective" and "Adverb" share AD and both read backwards, like "Article", which has the only L. "Preposition" and "Pronoun" share PR and read across.

Parts of Speech Activities

  • Write a sentence and label the part of speech of every word.
  • Find a word that can be both a noun and a verb.
  • Add the missing part of speech, the conjunction, with three examples.
