Easy Winter Word Search for Kids

Eight short winter words, none longer than five letters: the boots, coat and hat you put on to go outside, the cold, the frost on the window, the ice on the pond, the snow and the sled. It is a winter puzzle, not a Christmas one, so it works all through January and February too.

The 8x8 grid has no diagonals. Three of the words run from the bottom up, and two read backwards along a row, so young solvers get used to looking in four directions.

Easy Winter Vocabulary: 8 Words to Find

Words run across, up and down; 5 of the 8 read backwards. The longest words are Boots and Frost, with 5 letters each.

  • Boots: Warm, waterproof footwear for snow and slush.
  • Coat: A warm outer garment worn over other clothes.
  • Cold: Low in temperature: the feel of the air on a winter morning.
  • Frost: A thin layer of ice crystals that forms on grass, cars and windows on a cold, clear night.
  • Hat: A covering for the head; in winter, usually knitted wool.
  • Ice: Frozen water, from the thin film on a puddle to a frozen pond fit for skating.
  • Sled: A small vehicle on runners for sliding down snowy hills.
  • Snow: Frozen water vapor that falls from the clouds as white flakes.

How to Solve the Easy Winter Word Search

"Coat" and "cold" both start with CO, and both run from the bottom up, like "boots", the only word with a B and a double O. "Hat" and "ice" are the two words that read backwards. "Frost", "sled" and "snow", which has the only W, all run down.

Winter Activities for Kids on a Snow Day

  • Before going outside, find each piece of winter clothing in the list and put it on as you circle it.
  • Ask kids to name the opposite of each word they can: cold and hot, ice and water.
  • Keep a stack for snow days, when school is closed and everyone is stuck indoors.
