The Witches' Spell From Macbeth: Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog
In Act 4 of Macbeth, three witches circle a boiling cauldron as thunder rolls and drop in the strangest recipe in English literature. This word search hides their ingredients: eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat, tongue of dog, tooth of wolf, a fenny snake, a blindworm and a root of hemlock.
Find them all and the leftover letters spell the witches' most famous line. A fenny snake is a snake from the fens, or marshes, and a blindworm is a legless lizard. Hecate is the goddess of witchcraft who rules over the witches, and Macbeth, who begins the play as the Thane of Glamis, a Scottish lord, first meets them on a lonely heath.
How the hidden message works
In this puzzle, every letter that is not part of a word belongs to a secret message of 51 letters. Find all 12 words first. Then read the letters that are left over, starting at the top left and going row by row from left to right, and write them down in order. Online, the message lights up on the grid the moment you find the last word. On the printable PDF there is a blank space for each letter, and the answer key shows the full message.
