Reading a Wine Label: Vintage, Crianza, Riserva and Grand Cru
The words printed on wine labels. The vintage is the year the grapes were harvested, while a nonvintage wine blends several years. Spain uses Crianza for wines aged for a set time; Italy uses Riserva, Classico, for the historic heart of a region, and Superiore; and France ranks vineyards as Premier Cru and Grand Cru. Estate and single vineyard tell you where the grapes were grown, and reserve is used more loosely around the world.
Several words come in pairs, grand with cru and premier with cru, so read the list carefully.
