What Makes a Mammal? Hair, Milk, Live Birth and Warm Blood

Every word in this puzzle is part of the answer to one question: what makes an animal a mammal? Mammals are vertebrates with hair or fur, they are warm-blooded, most give birth to live young, and every mother feeds her babies with milk and nurtures them as they grow. Placenta is here because most mammals feed their unborn young through one.

Some answers are split into two words, so look for warm and blooded, and for live and birth. Diverse and evolution complete the picture: from tiny bats to blue whales, mammals have evolved into more than 6,000 species.

Mammal Vocabulary: 12 Words to Find

Words run across, up and down, and diagonally; 5 of the 12 read backwards. The longest word is Vertebrate, with 10 letters.

  • Birth: With "live", live birth: most mammals give birth to babies instead of laying eggs.
  • Blooded: With "warm", warm-blooded: mammals keep their body at a steady warm temperature whatever the weather.
  • Diverse: Very varied. Mammals range from bats that weigh 2 grams to blue whales of over 100 tonnes.
  • Evolution: The slow change of living things over many generations. Mammals evolved from reptile-like ancestors about 200 million years ago.
  • Hair: Fine strands that grow from the skin. Every mammal has hair at some point in its life, even whales.
  • Live: With "birth", live birth: the babies of most mammals develop inside the mother and are born alive.
  • Mammal: A warm-blooded vertebrate with hair that feeds its young on milk, like dogs, whales, bats and humans.
  • Milk: The food every mammal mother makes for her young. The word "mammal" comes from the Latin "mamma", breast.
  • Nurture: To care for and protect a young animal while it grows. Mammal parents nurture their young for weeks to years.
  • Placenta: The organ that feeds a baby inside its mother before birth, found in most mammals.
  • Vertebrate: An animal with a backbone: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
  • Warm: With "blooded", warm-blooded: able to keep a steady body temperature, as mammals and birds do.

How to Solve the Mammal Word Search

Half the words are short, so start with the long ones: "vertebrate" (10 letters, diagonal), "evolution" (straight down) and "placenta" (across). "Milk" has the only K and "warm" the only W, and both lie on backwards diagonals. Remember the pairs: "warm" with "blooded", and "live" with "birth".
