Animal Sound Words: Bark, Moo, Quack, Neigh and Roar

What does the dog say? Eleven animal sounds, from the farm (moo, neigh, quack), the house (bark, meow), the garden (buzz, chirp, tweet) and the wild (hiss, howl, roar). Most of them are onomatopoeia, words that imitate the sound they name, which makes them fun to say out loud.

The words are short, but this is a medium puzzle: six of the eleven are diagonal, and several read backwards. Online it takes most players around two minutes.

  • Hiss: The long "ssss" sound of a snake or an angry cat.
  • Howl: The long, loud cry of a wolf or a dog, used to call the pack together.
  • Meow: The sound a cat makes. Adult cats meow mostly to talk to people, rarely to other cats.
  • Moo: The low sound a cow makes.
  • Neigh: The high, long sound a horse makes.
  • Quack: The sound a duck makes.
  • Roar: The deep, loud call of a lion, heard up to about 8 km away.
  • Tweet: The short, high call of a small bird.

How to Solve the Animal Sounds Word Search

"Quack" has the only Q and "buzz" the only Z, a double one that reads backwards. Short words like "moo" and "hiss" are easy to miss on a diagonal, so check every slant around the O's and S's. "Neigh" and "roar" are the only two that read normally from left to right.
