Fish Anatomy: Dorsal, Pectoral and Caudal Fins, Gills and Lateral Line
The parts of a fish, as a biologist or a chef filleting one would name them. The fins: dorsal on the back, pectoral behind the head, ventral (pelvic) underneath and caudal, the tail. The operculum is the bony flap over the gills; the lateral line senses movement in the water; barbels are the whiskers of catfish and carp.
Inside, the swim bladder lets a fish float without effort, and the pyloric caeca help it digest. Swim and lateral are the first halves of swim bladder and lateral line.
