Medium Difficulty: Bigger Grids and the First Diagonals
The step from easy to medium is bigger than it looks. The grid grows from 64 to 121 letters, the list grows from about eight words to about ten, and words begin to run diagonally. 230 of the 232 medium puzzles use an 11 × 11 grid and the rest are 12 × 12; most lists hold exactly ten words.
Only two diagonal directions are used here: down and to the right, and its mirror, up and to the left. No medium word runs down-left or up-right, so every diagonal slopes the same way, like a backslash. Knowing that halves the diagonal search. About one word in six on this level is diagonal, and seven medium puzzles in ten have at least one.
The vocabulary steps up as well. Words average almost seven letters, and the topics move from things a child can point at to school subjects: body systems, the water cycle, algebra, the Bill of Rights, Shakespeare's plays. Long words such as Yellowstone, Ultraviolet and Troposphere stretch across all eleven columns.

Tips for Finding Diagonal Words
- Clear the straight words first. Most medium words still run across or down, so sweep rows and columns before you start on the diagonals.
- Then follow the backslash. Every diagonal word on this level runs from upper left to lower right or the reverse, so trace each diagonal line in that one direction and read it both ways.
- On a printed sheet, lay a ruler or the edge of a card along the diagonal to keep your eye on one line of letters instead of drifting to the next.
- Watch for double letters. Pairs like the LL in Yellowstone or the SS in Grass are easy to see in a grid, and checking the letters around them often finishes a word quickly.
- Count what is left. With ten words it pays to cross them off: the last two or three are usually the shortest or the diagonal ones, and knowing which kind is missing tells you where to look.
270 Ways to Hide a Seven-Letter Word
On an 11 × 11 grid a seven-letter word can start in five positions along each row or column. Four straight directions give 220 placements, and the two diagonals add 25 each, for 270 in all. That is almost three times the 96 spots a six-letter word has on an easy grid, which is why a medium puzzle takes roughly twice as long with only two or three more words.
